High-Speed Police Chase Turns Deadly When Motorcyclist Slams Into Fire Hydrant

SAN FERNANDO (CBSLA.com) — A motorcyclist early Wednesday was racing away from LAPD officers, at speeds up to 130 mph, when he slammed into a fire hydrant and died.

The pursuit began around 1 a.m. in Sun Valley where officers were responding to a reported shooting in the 12100 block of Sheldon Street.

They arrived to find a man matching the suspect description hop onto a motorcycle and speed away.

An LAPD helicopter helped trail the motorcyclist as he moved at dangerous speeds into San Fernando.

He lost control of the motorcycle and collided with a hydrant around 1:30 a.m. in the 1200 block of Truman Street near San Fernando Road.

The clipped hydrant sent a geyser of water into the street.

The motorcyclist died at the scene.

Authorities have not released his name, pending notification of his relatives.

Investigators say a gun was recovered at the crash site and they believe it was the one used in the Sun Valley shooting.
