IRVINE (CBS) — A motorcyclist was killed late Wednesday in a crash on the southbound Santa Ana (5) Freeway in Irvine.
The accident happened just after 11 p.m. near Bake Parkway, California Highway Patrol officials said. It was initially reported as a fatal hit-and-run.
According to the CHP, the motorcyclist was traveling in the fast lane when he lost control and was thrown from the bike. He was then run over by a vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle did not stop. Officials later received a call from a motorist who believed they had run over something near Bake Parkway.
The motorcyclist was pronounced dead on the scene by paramedics. His identity was not released.
Four lanes of the 5 Freeway was closed for several hours as officials investigated the accident.
